The best store... food is delicious
City East IGA is a fantastic little supermarket in an excellent location near the corner of Angas and Hutt Streets in the city. It has a good range of quality products throughout and is one of the best kept secrets in the city. The store has a good range of fruit and veg and meat, including very good specials at times. It has an excellent cheese bar at the front of the store, stocked with locally produced gourmet, artisan fine cheeses. Fresh bread is delivered every day, including fabulous artisan breads at good prices - you can get them made into sandwiches in the deli, and request your own filling. The grocery section has everything you need - despite the small size of the store, they pack in a good range including continental products you won't find anywhere else. The dairy/freezer section has everything you would expect in a standard store plus a decent ready meals section including gluten free and vegan options (and fabulous markdowns in the food to go fridge).The best part of the store, though, is the service deli. It has the best range of locally produced salads I have seen yet, all sold by weight - perfect if you are working to a budget. They will even do half-half of two or more salads and average the price if you want to try two different varieties for lunch. Behind the salad bar is a pie warmer, where you can purchase many varieties of Vili's pies plus the best kept secret - fantastic cheese and bacon rolls with a lot of cheese and bacon inside. City East also sells handmade wraps or rolls- they pack a lot into them at the best price I've seen in Adelaide and will make them to your diet or favourite filling on request.The sliced meats are splendidly presented and always of the best quality as are the olives and antipasto selection. Make sure to try the sundried tomato - fabulous! Then there are delicious savoury options, including arancini balls and vegan patties -and they will heat them up for you on request. At the end of the counter is the cakes section. Locally made, they come in all different varieties, including old-school favourites like muffins (they will heat them up for you if you want the perfect treat for a winter's day); chocolate eclairs, kitchener buns etc.They also make good tea, coffee or hot chocolate at affordable prices.And all this is delivered with good old-fashioned service. At checkout you are served quickly and professionally, ensuring you make the most of your lunch break or shopping trip. Plus, they will carry your bags to your car if needed. Another bonus is that the store is open very good hours - from 7-10 every day of the year bar Christmas day (they are still open Christmas morning).Overall, City East IGA is a fantastic store, delivering a great shopping experience you will want to return for again and again.
i go into this place almost every day, and there is NEVER any refried beans, for years, like none, ever. Even when i dont want any i check, and none, and they sell them! Theres always a big gaping hole where is says 'refried beans', HEY, BUY MORE REFRIED BEANS!
I have always found the staff to be very helpful. I have found that whether you want toothpicks or high quality roast. You will find it there.
Amazing how much they fit into a relatively small store, you can pretty much get whatever you are after there, from fresh fruit and veg, packaged meats as well as a large gourmet deli counter. Prices are really good considering the city location and the convenience. Couple short term parking spots at the front door as well as all the parking on Hutt Street. Store is well managed and a credit to the owner. Very high standard set by this store. Shelves always fully stocked, good range of produce/products, very clean and well presented with very helpful staff all at reasonable prices. I can see why it has won awards, you couldn't really ask for more. A real little gem of a store in the Adelaide CBD.
